The author seems ambivalent about Bin Laden getting killed. He was killed, get over it. Why should there be a trial? He clearly has taken responsibility for the planning of 9/11. Let’s ask some Arabs their position on Israel… should the Jews be driven from Israel? From the face of the earth? As a proud Jew, you will not get much sympathy from me

I grew up in Philly and can echo some of these sentiments. Disclosure… I vote Democrat. I agree, I do not want to live anywhere near Section 8 housing. I don’t care the ethnicity of the residents. Stop making this an issue of race, it’s an issue of poverty. I work 2 jobs to live in a nice area almost free from crime, noise, and industry. If you want to live in some crappy area where people don’t pay for their housing, go live there. Stop fucking blogging about it. If you want to make the argument that people are people so it doesn’t matter, then you’re an idiot. You know why I drive cautiously?  Because I have to pay for insurance. I want to live in an area that’s safe with good schools… who cares about your skin color

The 10 most segregated urban areas in America, mapped by Salon using the latest census data. Shown here is St. Louis, #7 on the list.

Honestly, I’m a little shocked that St. Louis is only #7…

Philly’s #9. From the article,

Main city population: 1,526,006
Metropolitan population: 5,965,343
Segregation level (dissimilarity): 68.41

According to University of Pennsylvania historian Thomas Sugrue, just 347 of the 120,000 homes constructed in the Philadelphia area between 1946 and 1953 were open to blacks. In the postwar years, working-class whites violently policed the boundaries of their neighborhoods, while the middle and upper classes fled to the suburbs well into the 1990s. Today, Puerto Rican neighborhoods divide working-class white and black neighborhoods in North Philadelphia and Kensington.

“The patterns of housing segregation in metropolitan Philadelphia are the legacy of discriminatory public policies and real-estate practices that played out for most of the 20th century,” says Sugrue, who chronicled the area’s open housing movement in “Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North.” “Though discrimination is now illegal, those patterns of segregation were so deeply entrenched that many people came to see them as ‘natural.’”

According to census data, the level of segregation between blacks and whites in the Philadelphia area is declining at a slower rate than during the 1990s. And just as white city-dwellers fled neighborhoods when black families arrived after World War II, suburban whites are fleeing to exurbs as blacks and Latinos move to older suburbs.

Local media coverage of the 2010 census data has emphasized that Philadelphia grew for the first time after 50 years of decline, thanks laregly to growing Latino and Asian populations. The persistence of segregation, however, has gone unmentioned, but the warning signs are clear: Whites led growth in far-flung counties like Chester in Pennsylvania, Gloucester and Ocean in New Jersey, and Cecil in Maryland; white population declined everywhere else as blacks, Latinos and Asians moved to resegregating older suburbs.

During the 1950s and ’60s, Philadelphia was a center of open housing activism. Civil rights activist and housing developer Morris Milgram, the Jewish son of left-wing garment-worker activists, was at the lead of the nationwide movement, building his own integrated neighborhoods in the 1950s and ’60s. The first development was Concord Park, built as a near replica of the then-whites-only subdivisions in Levittown.

Desegregation has also been contentious across the Delaware River in South Jersey, where suburbs are deeply fragmented, with miniature tax fiefdoms for the rich and white just minutes from crumbling warehouses for the poor like Camden.

Discussions about race in Philly are usually met with a deafening backlash from local whites, and the comments sections of the website of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News are locally infamous for their bigotry. Witness the letter to the editor written in response to this reporter’s recent article on regional segregation for Philadelphia Weekly:

“Between my wife and I, we work 3 jobs in one household so we can live as far as possible from Section 8 housing. Keep your brave new world, liberal views to yourself. I don’t want section 8 anywhere near me. I don’t want anyone receiving any type of government assistance living near me,” wrote Steve Arlo. “I pay THOUSANDS of dollars a year in Federal, State, City and property taxes to keep it away from my neighborhood. I’ll say it. They don’t deserve to live in or near my neighborhood. When are we going to stop this ‘free money’ mentality? I don’t care how horrible their neighborhood is. You made your bed now sleep in it. Remember, neighborhoods are made up of those that live in them.”

For the besieged white subdivision dweller, the American dream means freedom from society’s poor and black.

It’s sad but true. This is how the whites in my community, including my family sometimes, see it. A neighborhood becoming black/hispanic is seen as becoming “bad”. Then there’s the gentrification. People are a little irritated by wealthy white college kids and liberal yuppies moving in, but I guess a lot of people would prefer that because “at least they’re not black”. My neighborhood is basically an old Italian neighborhood that’s on the cusp of what used to be the projects (the high rises they blew up when I was in 2nd grade) with a lot of Mexican an Asian immigrants. There’s a lot of gentrification because it’s South Philly but not too threatening (not too hood, not too working class Italian). Personally I like my neighborhood’s racial makeup, and if I could pick one demographic to get the fuck out it would be the white hipsters. But the truth is it’s the working class white ethnics (the Italians, the Irish) that are moving to Jersey and the suburbs.

THIS IS DISGUSTING.are you kidding me right now? whoever made this should be ashamed of themselves. how dare you make girls feel even worse about themselves. how dare you promote anorexia. how dare you condemn people who aren’t skinny, how dare you condemn people who are not “beautiful” in society’s twisted eyes.how dare you.do you know how many girls will read this? girls who are struggling with their weight, their body, their image. they will read this and they will stop eating, because you have promoted it. do you know what happens when you stop eating? you don’t become those women you idolize on television, the ones with perfect hair and the perfect body and the one’s who look beautiful. those women eat, but they eat healthy and they exercise and they take care of their bodies. when you stop eating, when you stop nourishing your body, you slowly begin to kill yourself.when you stop eating, you become more at risk for hypotension. hypotension means low blood pressure. low blood pressure means your heart, your brain, and other critical organs are not getting enough blood. with anorexia often comes hair loss. with anorexia often comes brittle bones, due to a lack of calcium, putting you more at risk for more broken bones and even more serious breaks. your bones need to be strong to protect your organs. once your bones get weak, you live in a world more dangerous than you could ever imagine. with anorexia, your period could stop. sounds good, right? it isn’t. your period happens because you ovulate. when you stop eating for long enough, your period stops, and you stop ovulating. ovulating is how you make eggs to make babies. even if you get over the anorexia, it can still be a challenge to get pregnant.and these are not even half of the terrifying side effects that come with anorexia. bulimia? even more.
ladies. look in the mirror. don’t look at that flab you’ve always noticed and hated, don’t look at how your skin isn’t totally clear, don’t look at how your teeth are a little crooked or how your hair never looks right. look at how your eyes shine, how your smile lights up the room, how you are beautiful. because honey,YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and i will keep telling you that until you believe it. that goes for anyone who reads this. if you need my help, i will be here. there are so many people who are here for you.don’t let society control you.embrace your body, love your body.

for far too long that was what i thought every time i ate someting. looked at food. heard someone talking about food. it still is, but i no longer have a choice. i just wish someone had told me what was put in the caption.  over two years later, i’m not allowed to do any sport or exercise at all, mainly because my weight would drop but also because my bones are so bad that they could break in a flash, my pelvis and spinal chord being the worse affected. my blood pressure was so low that, along with the readings from my heart, the nurse said it was a miracle i wasn’t in a coma. the heart readings were so bad because it was wasting away. along with all my other organs and muscles. my stomach shrunk to about 1/10th the size of a normal one, which meant that when the force feeding started, one bar of chocolate would have me in physical agony for hours. as for ovaries etc? well apparently if you miss 3 periods, your risk of infertility increases dramatically. lets just say the only way i am likely to ever have a kid will be adoption. i have the concentration of a kid with ADHD. i have been in treatment for over a year and a half and this area of my life is still horrendous. i no longer have the mental capability of dealing with the effects of illness and treatment. i thought every bite was a struggle before… it is nothing compared to how hard it is now. don’t start. it’s too difficult to stop.
honestly, i don’t care what the media is telling you. it’s complete bull. be healthy and be happy. you don’t have to compromise one to acheive the other. they work together. listen to the girl above who is talking sense, not to the lies fed to you by some corporate image. be healthy AND happy.

this is so hurtful. you;ve no idea what people are reading this, what they’ve been through.

I’m not that offended. Hey, I lost 40 lbs, some of the advice is spot on…. drinking lots of water, and eating a lot less isn’t really bad advice. I understand that some people have eating disorders and sure, I don’t know what they go through. But you know, there are obese people (and lots of them) that may have heart attacks, hypertension, and get diabetes…. so maybe you should just lose the weight.
I happen to like girls with some meat on their bones. I don’t like seeing ribs! But let’s not go overboard here. There are many folks that say that as long as your healthy. So, overweight people listen up…. do you care to run 5 miles with me? Some can…. I ran a half marathon at 205. I love seeing a thicker, plump, chunky girl, I think it’s cute…. but there are a shitload of girls who are just plain fat. Get over it, you’re fat. Love your fat body all you want, just stop telling me how fucking healthy you are! I don’t want anyone to develop an eating disorder, but I’m not going to tell you it’s all OK, it’s not. Fat folks are not typically healthy, and most of it is self control, establishing better eating habits, and exercise.

Advice for the young

Well I don’t really want to crap on anyone’s parade, but I thought I would jot down a few thoughts that I had surviving being young. It’s not easy being young. My advice is very simple - Try to get through unmarked and unscathed.

I am looking at some of the tattoo pages, and I see some really foolish stuff there. Hey guys, trust me the love of your life now, you won’t even know in 10-15 years. Yup it’s true. She will get smart and find a husband, have kids etc. She won’t even recognize you. So please, don’t get her name permanently inked on your body, it will be a huge mistake. The goal is unmarked unscathed. I went to Banana Republic today and the guy stocking the shelves had tattoos up and down his arms and even on his fingers. OK, sounds simple but the things that look cool today are going to seem really silly years down the road. Maybe that’s why you don’t see many lime green polyester suits that were all the rage in 1975. Look, I don;t care if you want a tattoo, just think that maybe one day the thing that you get inked may not be as meaningful to you.

Here’s an obvious one: Don’t have kids. Yup, just don’t do it. Sure you’re playing house now…. but one day you will be alone. OK, I know that half the marriages end up in divorce. Got it, I’ll take my chances because the statistics for those who have kids without marriage and stay together has to be infinitesimal. Again, try to get out unmarked and unscathed.

Buying a house together? What! You are not comprehending this! What’s the chance of making it through a 30 year mortgage?

I’m sure there are a hundred more examples. You’re young. Go out and find yourself. Don’t shave, live a beatnik lifestyle, try new jobs, experiment, etc. Remember, this is  passing phase. I know that you are ensconced in the punk lifestyle ie. But if you find there are no older punks in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, you can safely assume that it’s a phase you are going through. Great, just try to come out of it unmarked and unscathed.

This is what I did at work today. I call this gay mannequin love. I tried very hard to get them to touch their crouch areas. Well these guys couldn’t get the position right. I’ll have to settle for hand holding.

So why are there no protests since Obama is President?
